Out of Many, One: Portraits of America's Immigrants
“I bought a signed copy of it. It's a great book, I highly recommend it.”
Why it is worth your time
Out of Many, One is George W. Bush's 2021 book of 43 oil portraits of immigrants to the US, each with a short account of the subject's life. It is his second collection of paintings after Portraits of Courage. The subjects range from a North Korean refugee to the former PepsiCo chief executive Indra Nooyi, and the book closes with the Bush Institute's proposals on immigration policy. Friedberg said on the Apr 30, 2021 episode, 10 days after publication, that he had bought a signed copy and recommended it. It is the odd one out on his list, with no link to science or energy. It suits readers who want a case for immigration made through individual lives rather than numbers. The caveat is that curator Diana Seave Greenwald, in Foreign Policy, called the portraits 'amateurish,' and the immigration policy recommendations are confined to a closing section.
