Red Notice
“Red Notice is one of my favorite books, probably top three books the last decade.”
Why it is worth your time
Red Notice is Bill Browder's 2015 account of making a fortune in Russia and then becoming an enemy of the Kremlin. Browder, the grandson of the American Communist Party leader Earl Browder, founded Hermitage Capital Management in 1996 and built it into the largest foreign investor in Russia. He was expelled in 2005. His lawyer Sergei Magnitsky uncovered a $230 million tax fraud by officials, was jailed, and died in custody in 2009. The second half covers Browder's campaign for the 2012 Magnitsky Act, which sanctions the people involved. Jason called it one of his favorite books and a top 3 of the decade on TWiST in December 2019. It is a biography with the pace of a thriller, which is his preferred combination. It suits readers interested in Russia, sanctions or emerging-market investing. The caveat is that this is Browder's own account of his fight with the Russian state, not an independent one.
