The Vital Question: Energy, Evolution, and the Origins of Complex Life
“That book, The Vital Question, is incredible.”
“I read a book this year that I really liked. It's called The Vital Question. It was a really good read.”
Why it is worth your time
The Vital Question is Nick Lane's 2015 account of why complex life exists at all. Lane is a biochemist at University College London. He argues that energy, not genes, set the limits: all complex cells descend from 1 event in which a cell took up another, and the resulting mitochondria powered a larger genome. Friedberg raised it on the Dec 2022 year-end episode as a book he had liked that year. Chamath backed it at once, called it incredible and paired it with Lane's earlier Life Ascending as required reading. For Friedberg it sits with his interest in biology and the origin of life. For Chamath, energy and evolution explain why systems scale. It suits readers with some school biology who want an argument, not a survey. The caveat is density. Bill Gates, who loved the book, warned that it is not for everyone and that some explanations are pretty technical.
