Putting the Rabbit in the Hat
“He has a great book and he reads the audiobook. Very enjoyable.”
Why it is worth your time
Putting the Rabbit in the Hat is Brian Cox's memoir, published in the UK in 2021 and in the US in January 2022. Cox grew up in Dundee, Scotland, where his father died when he was 8 and his mother suffered breakdowns. He joined the Dundee Repertory Theatre at 15, played Titus Andronicus at the Royal Shakespeare Company and Lear at the National Theatre, was the first screen Hannibal Lecter, in Manhunter, and became widely known late in his career as Logan Roy in Succession. The book is frank about colleagues and about his own faults. Jason recommended it on the December 2022 year-end episode and noted that Cox reads the audiobook himself, which is how Jason took it in. It suits readers who like actors' memoirs with opinions. The caveat is that the New Republic found the gossip about peers reads as convenient bluster, and Bookreporter warned that fans looking for inside dope on Succession will be disappointed.
